INTRODUCTION

The Aviation Industry in India is in the midst of a major technological and managerial change, with Air Transportation emerging as one of the major area of future development and potential.

With the recent change in the Aviation Policy by the Government, several vistas in business have opened up and new opportunities have emerged. The creation of new and incumbent airlines and private sector participation in Aviation projects related to aircraft manufacture, maintenance and charter, as well as development of new infrastructure and airports is an indication of these new developments. Several global aviation consultants are eyeing this opportunity and setting up their branches within the country.

However, education and training in the area of Air Transportation within the country seems to be almost a neglected and disjointed field. There is a need for unification of the knowledge base that is available in the various aviation establishments. Developments in this field happen at a very fast pace; techologies and procedures become obsolete very soon. Working professionals in one aviation organisation should therefore keep themselves abreast with the latest developments in other fields of aviation to broaden their perspective. Students in the academic institutes should also get an opportunity for prolonged interaction with the working professionals, to obtain a first-hand exposure to the various tasks and challenges that lie ahead.

This intensive course for working professionals was aimed to address this need. It consisted of 16 lectures (each of 90 minutes duration), spread over 13 weeks. The course faculty comprised of eminent professionals drawn from various aviation organizations, apart from IIT Bombay. Along with lectures, visits to Airworks India Engineering Pvt. Ltd., Air India, New Control Tower at Mumbai Airport were also organized. The course was conducted in conjunction with a similar course being run for the Master’s students of the Aerospace Engineering Department, IIT Bombay.
